Even if you re fermenting within a smaller environment like mason jar you ll need a weight to keep the produce.

I have done this as well usually i ll wrap them in a cheesecloth or a part of an onion bag so they ll spread out and stay on top though.

Marbles tied a in cheesecloth or muslin marbles work well because they can easily fit whatever size or shape jar you are using.

Be sure to boil them first for about 20 minutes to kill any competing or harmful bacteria.

Marbles marbles make great weights but make sure that they are paint glaze and lead free.
The job of the marbles is to sink the bag of hops to the bottom of the carboy or fermentation bucket.
Most traditional methods of lacto fermentation crocks barrels etc require keeping the produce submerged under the brine in order to protect it from bacteria that would otherwise rot the food the majority of fermenting crocks come with a weight that fits perfectly inside.

The only equipment needed is a nylon hop bag a few clean glass marbles and about an ounce of hops.

You can use as much as two ounces of hops for a five gallon batch but one is enough to get the job done.
2 i may be wrong on this one but i ve heard that metal and fermentation don t mix.
Bigger marbles will probably be easier because you won t have to remove so many when you re done.
Be careful though that the marbles are paint or glaze free.
